• English is the only language used for doing business.
• Speaking English is a must, otherwise you will need to be accompanied by an interpreter and possibly a lawyer.
Working climate
• Time is essential for Americans. Being punctual is very important!
• Lateness (even ten minutes) is seen very badly and can lead to failure in negotiations.
• Business meals should be short (under an hour).
• Anglo-Saxon working methods should be used.
• First-names are used.
• Your contacts will usually be well informed before a business meeting. You will need get all your facts right, it could be helpful to seek expert advice when preparing the meeting.
• Expect to speak with several different contacts at a meeting.
• Americans go to meetings in very casual clothing, with a relaxed, often friendly and familiar manner. This does not mean that they shouldn't be taken seriously.
• Keep a close eye on the outcome of negotiations, appearances can be deceiving.
• As a French person, don't turn up to the meeting in casual clothing with a relaxed manner, Americans are familiar with how French people do business and would not understand such behaviour.

• Your goals need to be precise and transparent.
• Do not hesitate to use concrete examples to show that your company is a successful business.

• Americans appreciate French savoir-faire and will weigh up the prices accordingly.
• The interior decorating market is booming, particularly in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
• Have the capacity to provide fast response-times for orders.
• The American market favours large sizes (glasses, plates, cups …).
