Rare Arts and Crafts professions

Professionals or businesses are considered to practise a rare Arts and Crafts profession when they are in possession of:

  • rare know-how involving sophisticated technical skills
  • old archives containing rare books and
    documents.

  • rare raw material.

  • des machines et outils anciens ou rares.
  • specific and rare skills associated to a technique.
  • common practises shared by a very small number of professionals or a local community

  • know-how characterised by a lack or unavailability of courses in official education networks.

The directory of businesses practising rare Arts and Crafts professions meets UNESCO objectives in the framework of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This directory is available at: http://www.metiersrares.com/

http://www.unesco.org/culture/ich/index.php
UNESCO considers the cultural diversity of practices and populations represented by this heritage to be a guarantee for human creativity. .

Businesses applying a rare know-how are often the last representatives of an exceptional craft skill or production, notably those necessary for the preservation of movable and immovable heritage, or those constituting an essential link in terms of the sector's evolution with respect for local communities and sustainable development.
